My room might seem minimal-ish to you right now, but it hasn’t always been like that. Half of the walls used to be covered in collages ceiling-to-floor, so when I decided I needed a fresh start (and a fresh paint job), I thought I’d go for the adult version of a collage which is of course, a gallery wall. I don’t consider my gallery wall complete, but I’m pretty content with what I’ve got right now, and I’m not really sure I want to expand it dramatically, since I’m quite used to the negative space.

Το δωμάτιό μου μπορεί να φαίνεται ότι είναι σχεδόν minimal, αλλά δεν ήταν πάντα έτσι. Οι μισοί τοίχοι κάποτε ήταν καλυμμένοι με κολάζ από το ταβάνι μέχρι το πάτωμα, οπότε όταν αποφάσισα ότι το δωμάτιο μου χρειάζεται μια αλλαγή (και βάψιμο), αποφάσισα να κάνω την ενήλικη εκδοχή του κολάζ που είναι ένα gallery wall! Δεν θεωρώ ολοκληρωμένο το gallery wall που έχω αυτή τη στιγμή, αλλά είμαι πολύ ικανοποιημένη με το πώς έχει βγει, και για να πω την αλήθεια το έχω συνηθίσει αρκετά, οπότε δεν είμαι σίγουρη ότι θα το επεκτείνω ιδιαίτερα.

× Get inspiration 

Before you start drilling holes into your wall, you should at least have a general idea of what you want to create, what style and color palette you want to go for, what suits your space etc. Pinterest is the best platform for that kind of stuff, and it will help you whether you’re looking for something in particular or not. Πριν ξεκινήσουμε με τα πρακτικά, το πιο σημαντικό είναι η έμπνευση! Πριν λοιπόν πάρεις το σφυρί στο χέρι, πρέπει να έχεις μια γενική έστω ιδέα του τι θέλεις να κάνεις, τι στυλ και χρώματα θα έχει, τι ταιριάζει στον χώρο σου κλπ. Εννοείται πως το Pinterest σε αυτά βοηθάει πάρα πολύ, είτε ψάχνεις κάτι συγκεκριμένο είτε όχι. (Κι επειδή είμαι μεγάλη θαυμάστρια του Pinterest μπορείς να δεις ιδέες σε αυτό και αυτό το board μου!)

× Choose a color palette

Your color palette depends solely on your personal style and taste. You could go for something bright and colorful, something more monochromatic (for example you could use various shades of blue or whatever color you like), or go for a classic black and white.

Η χρωματική παλέττα που θα χρησιμοποιήσεις εξαρτάται τελείως από το στυλ σου και το στυλ του χώρου σου. Μπορεί να θες κάτι φωτεινό και πολύχρωμο, κάτι μονόχρωμο (πχ. διάφορες αποχρώσεις του μπλε ή οποιουδήποτε χρώματος σου αρέσει), ή ένα κλασσικό ασπρόμαυρο.

× Blend different styles

This is definitely a personal choice, I just think that this way your gallery wall will look ten times more interesting! To create a mix and match wall decor, instead of using just posters and pictures, add mirrors, clocks, vinyl records, three dimensional art, or whatever suits the style you’re going for.

You can have a similar look by just using different shaped or colored frames. However, if you choose colorful posters/pictures, try to use frames that won’t be too distracting.

I personally wanted to create a gallery wall that combines things that I visually and thematically really like, so it turned out kind of minimal, kind of vintage, and very monochromatic! I also tried to incorporate colors (white, black, silver) and materials (wood, metal) that can be found throughout my room, so the gallery wall blends well with the rest of the space.

Φυσικά αυτό  είναι προσωπική επιλογή, αλλά νομίζω ότι έτσι ένα gallery wall αποκτά περισσότερο ενδιαφέρον! Για ένα mix and match decor, εκτός από φωτογραφίες ή αφίσες, βάλε καθρέφτες, γράμματα, ρολόγια, βινύλια, κάτι τριδιάστατο, ή γενικά ό,τι σε αντιπροσωπεύει (και ταιριάζει με το αποτέλεσμα που θες). 

Παρόμοιο αποτέλεσμα θα έχεις αν συνδυάσεις διαφορετικά μεγέθη ή χρώματα στις κορνίζες. Αν όμως επιλέξεις χρωματιστές εικόνες το gallery wall σου, καλό θα ήταν οι κορνίζες να είναι πιο διακριτικές ώστε να μην αποσπούν την προσοχή. 

Προσωπικά ήθελα το gallery wall που θα φτιάξω να συνδυάζει τα πράγματα που μου αρέσουν και οπτικά αλλά και θεματικά, κι έτσι βγήκε λίγο minimal, λίγο vintage, και πολύ μονόχρωμο! Επίσης προσπάθησα να συμπεριλάβω τα χρώματα (άσπρο, μαύρο, ασημένιο) και τα υλικά (ξύλο και μέταλλο) που υπάρχουν σε όλο το δωμάτιο ώστε να δένει αρμονικά με τον υπόλοιπο χώρο.

× How & Where 

Even if you have figured out everything mentioned above, drilling into your wall is not an easy decision to make, especially if you are a visual person like I am, and “trying to picture” how it will turn out stresses you out! Here’s what you can do:

• Lay everything on the floor and rearrange it until you get it right! Take pictures of the different versions you’ll create until you make up your mind!
• When you’re 100% sure about the arrangement, use some paper to trace the frames you want to put up, use tape to stick them to your wall (you could even find a collage template at IKEA), and mark the spot using a pencil so you know where to drill. That way you will be able to see the final result, if it looks good alongside any furniture there might be around, whether it’s balanced and at the right height, and all of that without ruining your wall! Remember that a gallery wall (just like any wall hanging), should be at eye-level, and not too high or too low.

Ακόμα κι αν έχεις σκεφτεί όλα τα παραπάνω, δεν είναι εύκολο να πάρεις την απόφαση να καρφώσεις τον τοίχο σου, ειδικά αν είσαι οπτικός τύπος και το να “φαντάζεσαι πάνω κάτω” που θα μπει το κάθετί σου προκαλεί στρες! Να τι μπορείς να κάνεις:

• Άπλωσέ τα όλα στο πάτωμα και αναδιοργάνωσέ τα μέχρι να καταλήξεις που σου αρέσει το κάθε τι! Βγάλε φωτογραφίες την κάθε “εκδοχή”  μέχρι να σιγουρευτείς!
• Όταν έχεις βεβαιωθεί ότι η σύνθεση που έκανες είναι όπως ακριβώς την θες, χρησιμοποίησε χαρτί, κάνε τα περιγράμματα των όσων θες να βάλεις στο gallery wall σου, κόλλησέ τα με ταινία στον τοίχο (μπορείς ακόμα και να βρεις ένα έτοιμο πλάνο στα ΙΚΕΑ), και σημείωσε με ένα μολύβι που ακριβώς θα γίνει η τρύπα. Έτσι θα μπορέσεις να δεις πώς θα είναι η τελική του μορφή, αν ταιριάζει με τα έπιπλα που πιθανώς υπάρχουν τριγύρω, αν είναι στο σωστό ύψος και αν είναι ίσιο, κι όλα αυτά χωρίς να καταστρέψεις τον τοίχο σου! Κάνε τις τελευταίες αλλαγές και να θυμάσαι ότι ένα gallery wall (όπως και τα μεμονωμένα κάρδα), πρέπει να είναι στο ύψος του ματιού και όχι πολύ ψηλά ή πολύ χαμηλά.
